The Curse is over, Washington!

On Monday, May 7th, 2018, Evgeny Kuznetsov of the Washington Capitals scored a breakaway
goal to win game 6 of their series against the Pittsburgh Penguins in overtime and thus punch their
ticket to their first eastern conference finals since the 1997-98 season when they won the conference
finals against the Buffalo Sabres and then preceded to get swept by the Detroit Red Wings in the
Stanley Cup Finals.

This berth to the eastern conference finals means a lot to the players, fans and staff of the
Washington Capitals organization. The Capitals have not only not been to the ECF in 20 years, but
have also had difficulty within the first and second round of the playoffs, especially against the
Penguins. The Penguins are the Capitals' kryptonite.

With this long-awaited series win, the Capitals are now 1-9 in series against the Penguins in the
playoffs, most of which are in the second round.

For the Capitals to finally beat the Penguins in the second round, to advance to the ECF and to
exorcise their demons against Pittsburgh gives a chance to their players, coaches and staff to make
a well deserved Stanley Cup run. They’re consistently excellent in the regular season and finally, they
have a chance to prove themselves in the playoffs. The last time the Capitals were in the ECF, none
of their current players were playing in the NHL yet. Most of them were still in elementary school.

And for the fans, they finally have something to cheer about now that their team is in the ECF. Their
disappointment because of early playoff elimination every year since 1997-98 despite having a very
promising regular season is finally over.

The Capitals are set to play the Tampa Bay Lightning in the ECF, who beat the Bruins four games
to one in the second round of the playoffs. It will be a tough matchup as both teams are playing great,
physical hockey with potent offences and great defensive abilities. The matchups are even across the
board, except for goaltending, where Tampa Bay gets the edge as Andrei Vasilevsky has been better
than Braden Holtby in these playoffs with a better GAA and save percentage.

The winner of this series will play the winner of the Vegas or Nashville/Winning series in the 2018
Stanley Cup Finals.
